FRICTION

Friction addresses the construction of contemporary masculinity, exploring how competition and performance have shaped male identity from our early experiences to the present day.

Drawing on personal observations and cultural shifts — from the dominance-driven norms of my school years to today’s political climate marked by figures like Donald Trump and the rise of masculinity influencers championing a narrow “real man” ideal —this work questions the reliance on stoicism and dominance. It challenges the notion that masculinity must be rigid and unyielding. Many in society remain unaware of its pervasive influence, which leads men to be haunted by the fear of failure, trapped by the outdated expectations of what defines a “true” male.

By engaging with hyper-masculine stereotypes in sports and reinterpreting them through crop outs, staged compositions, and depictions of vulnerability, my work aims to challenge the supposed fixedness and rigidity of traditional masculinity. It underscores the socially constructed nature of these ideals, revealing that masculinity is not fixed but rather fluid and complex.
