The Illiad, the famous epic by Homer, unfolds the story of the Trojan War. One of the protagists is the outstanding hero Achilles, who has a close relationship to Patroclus. The debate surrounding their relationship has persisted over the ages.

However, reviewing how Achilles spoke of Patroclus, it indicates a profound and intimate relationship between them. It would be misleading and unfair to claim there were no romantic undertones between the two.

Our mindset about masculinity has changed since ancient times. It has become more harmful towards the nature of men. How we look at men in today’s society is one of bravery, strength, heteronormativity and stoicism. Men are not allowed to be weak, to show emotion, to expose ourselves to our vulnerable side. The narrative told contrasts with the love Achilles felt for Patroclus.
